Account Creation

Account credentials allow users to access controlled data and contribute data to ARCHIMEDES.

When creating an ARCHIMEDES account, you will be asked to indicate if you are a Principal Investigator (PI) – an independent researcher affiliated with a research institution who leads a portfolio of scientific research (e.g., university professor, physician with a research appointment at a hospital or healthcare institution, researcher in a private company).

If you are a PI, you can proceed with account creation and select which of the following permissions you want: Data Contribution, Controlled Data Access, or both. Please refer to Please refer to Step 2: Data Access or Data Contribution for additional information.

If you are not a PI, you will need to obtain an invitation from a PI to either contribute data or access controlled data. Your account will be created upon receiving your first invitation.

Data Access

Data contributed to ARCHIMEDES will be made available to users through Open Access and Controlled Access tiers. 

Open Data: Anyone can access Open Data without needing to create an account or establish any contract or agreement. Simply select Access Data above to access our open data repository.

Controlled Data: As a Principal Investigator (PI) you can access controlled data by creating an ARCHIMEDES account and submitting a Data Access Request (DAR) for your specific data of interest. Non-PIs must receive an invitation from their PI to access a controlled dataset.

Each DAR requires one of the following:

  1. That a user is covered by an existing Institutional Data Access Agreement (I-DAA). This agreement must only be established once per institution and will provide controlled access to all Principal Investigators (PIs) from your institution for any and all DARs they submit moving forward. An I-DAA can be initiated when creating an account or by requesting additional permissions within an existing account. In either case, you will be prompted to provide contact information for your institution’s legal signing authority to initiate this process.
    We recommend that your institution also establishes a Data Contribution Agreement (DCA) along with its I-DAA. For more information on the DCA, please refer to Step 3: Data Contribution.

  2. That a user submits a single-use Data Access Agreement (DAA) along with each individual DAR. A DAA is a simple “single-shot” agreement that is established directly by a Principal Investigator (PI) and governs access for a single data request. These must be replicated for each DAR. This agreement only needs to be submitted along with a DAR if your institution does NOT already have an I-DAA in place.

Data Contribution

Users can contribute health data and select the tier of access through Open Access or Controlled Access.  

Data Contribution Permissions: As a Principal Investigator (PI) you can contribute data to ARCHIMEDES by creating an account and requesting Data Contribution Permissions. Obtaining said permissions requires that your institution has a Data Contribution Agreement (DCA) in place. This agreement must only be established once per institution and will provide contribution permissions to all PIs from your institution who create an account moving forward. A DCA can be initiated when creating an account or by requesting additional permissions within an existing account. In either case, you will be prompted to provide contact information for your institution’s legal signing authority to initiate this process.

Project Creation: Once a PI has been granted Data Contribution Permissions, they can create a project within ARCHIMEDES and begin contributing data. Data can be contributed either from studies that have already been completed (bulk deposit of a complete dataset) or from studies for which you will be collecting data and uploading to ARCHIMEDES on an ongoing basis. In either case, the PI must submit a unique Data Contribution Form (DCF) for each project they would like to add. PIs can then invite other team members (research assistants, trainees, other PIs, etc.) to collaborate on specific projects.

We recommend that your institution also establishes an Institutional Data Access Agreement (I-DAA) along with its DCA. For more information on the I-DAA, please refer to Data Access.
